This is where it gets... fun...ny!
I swear my team of doctors know just when I need a good pick me up! Today is the day I'm FINALLY getting my PEG tube removed!! I mean, what's one more scar, right? I have counted the major scars and I have about 14 of them. But if you were to count the staple scars...oh my goodness! I don't even know what that number would be!
Anyways, PEG tube is being removed while I am watching HGTV. My doctor is poking and prodding around and noticed they did quite the stitch job on the tube! He had to take his time and really make sure every stitch was removed. Meanwhile I am still watching HGTV. I think it was 'Love It or List It.' Once he got all of the stitches removed, it was ready to remove the big guy.
My doctor took ahold of the tube, looked at me and said, "Are you ready, Jess?"
I shook my head YES.
He said, "Are you SURE?"
This time I actually SAID, "Yes."
He said, "Okay then." He took a deep breath and looked at me again. Then he said, "On the count of three I am going to pull the tube. One....two...."
AND THEN HE PULLED THE TUBE AND STILL SAID. "THREE!"
I laughed so hard and was shaking my head. I said, "What was the point of still saying three?" He got a good laugh out of it as well.
Have I mentioned how AMAZING this team of doctors, nurses, and therapists really are?!
Today I was in PT with Carolyn and the amazing student, Keisha. I was in the Vector today working on gait training along with my balance training. They had me step over 8" hurdles! That took so much out of me. I remember even knocking a few over. Just so you have an idea of how my walking was when I was still in therapy! In PT today, they asked if I wanted a wheelchair to be sent home with me. I immediately said, 'no!' I wanted a rolling walker, and they did some more exercises with me to get me sturdy and ready for discharge!
With OT, they had me out of the wheelchair and knelt down on the floor and tossing a ball to the wall and catching it! They were working on my balance coordination. I did well with NO falling over! Hooray! Also, I walked around the gym today carrying a basket and picking up plastic barrels that were randomly placed everywhere. This worked on my visual scanning as well as my balance coordination for walking and completing ADLs independently.
For therapeutic exercise, I went on the bike for a little with minimal rest breaks. I did modified crunches and then added in a medicine ball and did trunk twists while bringing the ball to each hip. They had me do some squats as well! All to work on my functional mobility to improve independence with ADLs.
I don't know, I think my therapists all know something I do not know!! Why else are they ramping up with therapies?
My Rehab Psychologist came in to check up on me as I had an interview with the CPS Investigator. Apparently, someone had called the Investigator on me WHILE I WAS IN A COMA! The investigator had to come out and ask me some questions. To which he said, I am now going to CLOSE this case. The Investigator AND my Psychologist were both dumbfounded. They had no idea what was going on. Neither do I!! I have spent the past THREE MONTHS in a hospital!
Today with SLP, we worked on widening my mouth more and chewing small bite sized pieces of food. She also asked questions on the orientation log. You know, the usual name and where you are and what is the date. I got a 30 out of 30 with all of that! We also played UNO. It's always fun to play a card game at the end of the session.
There will be victory here!
King Jesus, forever by my side!!
