“At any given moment you have the power to say this is not how the story is going to end.”
Doctor number one! I'll have to split these two visits into two separate posts! But, he is my lovely Ocular Plastic Surgeon. I know…you hear ‘plastic surgeon’ and think…’she must be vain.’
No way! He helps people and he absolutely loves his job! He has been fascinated by my case, so much so, that he recommended me to a Facial Reconstructive Surgeon!
Yes…ANOTHER PLASTIC SURGEON!
But today’s appointment was all about figuring out the size of gold weight to use in my upper eyelid. With my right eye (yes, I’ve had this surgery before), he started with the weight of 1.2grams. So he started with 1.2grams for my left eye!

He sticks a weight on my upper eyelid and waits about 10-15 minutes. He sees his colleagues/residents or visits with his other patients. Then he comes back and checks my eyes, see if they close farther, see if I can open my eyes. Next size up! Unless that size is weighing me down. But he starts with 1.2grams and then goes to 1.4 and so on, until he gets to 1.8. Boy was that one feeling a little heavy!!
He got his answer, and it was a bit different in weight in comparison to my right eye. My right eye has a gold weight of 1.4grams. The left eye is getting a gold weight of 1.6grams! He really feels that having the weight plus suturing my eyelids together will really help my eye to close again. PLUS, doing the suturing of my eyelids will give me more of a symmetrical look!!
He was explaining everything to the resident that was with him. Letting him know what was paralyzed, what was droopy, what needed to be brought up, etc. He also told him how he does the gold weight sizing at first, which he places the gold weight 'central nasal' and not central as doing the sizing closer to the nose gives you a more accurate weight. He also filled him in and let him know that when he does the procedure, he puts the gold weight more at the top of the eyelid. He had me close my eyes so he could show the resident. I'm super excited for this upcoming surgery!!! I'm doing a happy dance!
I thanked him at the end of it all for getting me in to see the facial reconstructive surgeon. He said I'll like him a lot because he is really friendly and doesn't have a grouchy side to him.
I see him tomorrow...so we shall see about that!
*****See next post for that appointment*****
